Murphy ignites NJ’s future with Artificial Intelligence Hub plans

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber have announced plans to establish a hub for artificial intelligence (AI) in the state, in collaboration with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). The initiative aims to empower New Jersey’s leadership in AI, stimulate job growth, and facilitate responsible development in the field.

  • The AI hub plans to leverage state funding and private sector partnerships to catalyze innovation in AI technologies.
  • It is expected to drive economic development across the region and guide governments, and public entities on AI implementation.
  • The new initiative once again emphasizes the Murphy Administration’s commitment to nurture innovation and future-proof technologies, in alignment with New Jersey’s globally-acclaimed higher education institutions.

Bringing together AI researchers, industry pioneers, start-up companies, and various collaborators, the initiative will stimulate research and development, allocate dedicated accelerator space, and promote the ethical use of AI for social good. It also aims to accelerate workforce development to support new technology development, in collaboration with other universities, community colleges, and vocational schools in New Jersey.

Drawing on Princeton’s leadership in AI technologies and its institutional strengths in technology policy and education, the initiative plans to apply AI across a range of fields and conduct foundational research on AI techniques and application. This collaborative effort will utilize technology for social good, leveraging New Jersey’s unique strengths in the health, sustainability, financial, and technology sectors.

Governor Murphy has also issued Executive Order No. 346, establishing an Artificial Intelligence Task Force responsible for studying emerging AI technologies. The Task Force will examine potential societal impacts of AI and prepare recommendations for government actions encouraging the ethical use of AI technologies. The Executive Order presents an innovative initiative to train New Jersey’s State workforce about AI development, use, and risks.

This AI hub establishment plans to pave the way forward in anticipating and shaping the future. By harnessing Princeton’s academic excellence and New Jersey’s innovative spirit, this partnership hopes to solve complex problems and overcome significant challenges. A unique AI conference is also scheduled for April 11 at Princeton University, gathering leaders from academia, industry, and government to discuss pressing AI issues.
