TLDR: Google has launched the AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe to provide training and skill development in artificial intelligence (AI) to support the region’s workforce. The programme will include AI training and skills for vulnerable communities, funding and support for AI startups, and expanded AI courses available to everyone. Google.org is dedicating €25m ($28m) to support AI training and skills across Europe, with €10m set aside for equipping workers with necessary skills. The company is also opening applications for its Google for Startups Growth Academies, aimed at supporting startups using AI to tackle societal challenges in health, education and cybersecurity.

Aims of the AI Opportunity Initiative

Google is launching the AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe, a programme designed to provide training and skills development in artificial intelligence (AI) to support the region’s workforce.

Europe can lead the way in using AI to create a strong and equitable economy, with more productive industries, greater meaningful work, and new jobs emerging. The programme aims to empower Europe’s workforce and ensure that everyone can benefit from AI developments.

The Three Pillars of the Initiative

The AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe will consist of three main elements:

  1. AI training and skills for vulnerable communities: As part of the initiative, Google.org will contribute €25m ($28m) to support AI training and skills development across Europe, with a particular focus on vulnerable and underserved groups. €10m ($11m) of this funding will be dedicated to equipping workers with the skills they need to avoid being left behind. The AI Opportunity Fund: Europe, in collaboration with the Centre for Public Impact, will seek applications from social enterprises and non-profit organisations that can help reach the people most likely to benefit from this training.
  2. Support for startups: The initiative will include the launch of Google for Startups Growth Academies across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. These academies will support startups that use AI to address societal challenges in health, education, and cybersecurity. Selected startups will receive assistance from Google in scaling their operations, expanding their user base, and accessing relevant expertise.
  3. New training for everyone: To make AI more accessible, Google is expanding its AI foundational courses to 18 languages. These courses will be free and available to anyone interested in learning about AI. Additionally, the company will enhance its Google Career Certificates program, providing learners with practical experience in applying AI to workplace scenarios.
