Tess deBlanc-Knowles has been appointed as the Special Assistant to the Director for Artificial Intelligence at the National Science Foundation (NSF). She will continue to hold her current position as Strategic Adviser for Technology Policy and Strategy at the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships. In her new role, deBlanc-Knowles will take the lead on AI-related issues within the NSF and will be responsible for implementing the Executive Order on the Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI released by the Biden administration in October. DeBlanc-Knowles expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating that she is “honored to be working with the NSF leadership team to help harness AI for good and support the Foundation’s critical role in assisting our nation to realize AI’s myriad benefits while mitigating its substantial risks.” NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan praised deBlanc-Knowles as a “recognized leader” and highlighted her expertise in advancing AI-related research.
