SAG-AFTRA and labels agree: Artists protected by AI guidelines.

TLDR:

  • SAG-AFTRA and leading record labels have reached a deal that includes protections for artists from AI technology.
  • The deal includes protections for creators, increased minimums, health and retirement improvements, and an increase in streaming revenue coverage.

SAG-AFTRA, a union representing actors and media professionals, has reached a tentative deal with major record labels to protect artists from the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The agreement, which will be in effect until the end of 2026, includes provisions that define “artist,” “singer,” and “royalty artist” as only humans, addressing concerns about AI-generated music impersonating human artists and impacting creators’ livelihoods. The deal also requires clear consent and minimum compensation before the release of sound recordings using digital replications of artists’ voices.

The agreement also includes improved minimums, health and retirement benefits, and increased streaming revenue coverage for artists. The deal was unanimously approved by SAG-AFTRA’s executive committee and will be sent to members for ratification.

SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, emphasized the protection of members and the importance of innovation enhancing, not diminishing, the unique value of each artist’s contribution. The Record Label Negotiating Committee expressed its satisfaction with the agreement and stated its commitment to continuing its partnership with SAG-AFTRA in the evolving music industry.
